As a concept, the Nucleus of Spiral Development has evolved from an approach to social and economic development that was developed by Jose Jonaze (a prominent Mozambican businessman) and Eric du Plessis (who hails from South Africa).
The Nucleus of Spiral Development refers to a model of development, using a system of core projects, from which economic and social benefits are derived. This is achieved by systematically developing further outwards in a spiral from established pioneer Villages (HIVES, see below) in each district. By evaluating the most appropriate crops, systems and technologies, the process of organic growth will ensure stable, sustainable and profitable benefits for all stakeholders.
Mozambique and the SADC region are beset with social and economic development problems, many of which are being addressed at a policy and strategic level, but a lack of capacity at operational level is hampering these programmes.
